Training and Education
National Fire Academy
Through its courses and programs, the National Fire Academy (NFA) works to enhance the ability of fire and emergency services and allied professionals to deal more effectively with fire and related emergencies. Courses are delivered at the resident facility in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and throughout the Nation in cooperation with State and local fire training organizations and local colleges and universities.
NFA fire protection technology courses cover topics such as:
- Plans review for inspectors
- Evaluation performance-based designs
- Fire inspection principles
- Principles of fire protection (structures and systems)
- Fire protection systems for incident commanders

Coffee Break Training for Fire and Building Inspectors
These one-page notices, posted every Tuesday, provide technical training in fire protection systems, building construction, codes and standards, inspection techniques, hazardous materials and administrative tips. Each notice includes a photograph or drawing that illustrates the point of the training lesson. Browse the Archive 
Independent Study: Using Engineer and Architect Scales
Using and interpreting information from engineer (civil) and architect scales is an important fire protection engineering skill. Construction and fire protection equipment drawings must be interpreted with a high degree of accuracy. On completion of this independent study course, the student - using an architect or engineer scale and a set of scaled drawings - will be able to select the correct scale (tool) and interpret dimensions with 100 percent accuracy.
